We often get asked what to bring up to the mountains. Here’s a bit of guidance.
The weather can change quickly in the Simiens - 28 degrees Celsius at 3pm, down to 5 degrees Celsius just 5 hours later. So the key to success is layering. Thermals, hiking trousers, long shirts, lights wool sweaters, heavy wool sweaters, etc. If you’re in the lodge, you can always retreat to the fireplace when it cools down in the evenings, but if you’re out for a trek, you’ll need a few more things. Either way, have a skim through the list below for ideas.
warm four season sleeping bag (these are available from Limalimo Lodge, please let us know if you need them)
walking boots
walking socks
walking poles (if you’re into them)
day pack
binoculars
sun glasses
sun cream and lip sun block
sun hat
warm hat
gloves
scarf
thermal clothes (for evenings)
warm jacket (for evenings)
waterproof clothing
first aid kit
day pack
refillable water bottle(s)
towel
small change for souvenirs/beers along the way
camera (and spare battery?)
toilet roll(s)
pillow
torch/head lamp
soap
hand sanitizer
first aid kit
entertainment: pack of cards? good book? frisbee?
Most trek companies will provide camping equipment (including tents, mattresses, and cooking gear). But do check with your team - there’s nothing worse than showing up to your camp site to find that you don’t have a tent!
On treks, the weight limit is 15kg per person, but we would advise only taking what you really need (leave the rest for pick up when you return to the lodge if you like). The bags are carried by mules, you just need to carry your day packs.
